In 2014, President Jimmy Carter joined hundreds of volunteers in Fort Worth to build 20 Habitat homes in a single week! This effort in the Meadowbrook neighborhood demonstrated how an influx of empowered homeowners in a concentrated area can transform a neighborhood. This success lead to the launch of our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in our first three partner neighborhoods in Fort Worth – Como, Hillside Morningside, and Carver Heights East. With the support of volunteers and donors, we’re so excited that we’ve hit the halfway point of our multi-year, multi-million-dollar commitment!
We build in sufficient scale to “tip” the neighborhoods in a positive direction. A hardworking family, in a superbly crafted home, will experience better outcomes when located in a healthy and vibrant neighborhood. Homeownership is the key to both the family and neighborhood!
Our goal is to bring new homeowners into forgotten or blighted areas until the new families overcome the negative elements. Between the efforts of the families and the beautification of the streetscape, the momentum is shifting and the neighborhood is tipping!
Shelby Rico moved into her Habitat home in Hillisde Morningside two years ago. Her parents already lived in the neighborhood, so it was the perfect fit for her and her kids. She’s watched the neighborhood become more family oriented since she moved in and more Habitat families have joined her. Her kids love playing outside, which they couldn’t do at their previous home. Shelby loves that her kids have friends in the neighborhood. She’s even connected with her neighbors, who she says are very considerate. Recently, Shelby has been answering her neighbors’ questions about how she trained her dog to behave so well. Shelby says, “the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. Before, it looked sad. Now, it feels warm.”
Our partner neighborhoods are growing and thriving! And, with the help of donors and volunteers, our families are tipping their neighborhoods!
We are halfway to our goal, and it is great to see so much progress being made! However, the work is not done yet. We invite you to join us in positively tipping these neighborhoods by volunteering, making a donation, or shopping at or donating to our ReStores.
Thank you for your support and for helping us build strong families and neighborhoods!
